Daily Routines
Second graders work and play hard all day long, so getting a good night's sleep is key. Students who get breakfast from the cafeteria can eat breakfast in our room during homeroom. Students will have time for two snacks each day. Please pack a nutritious snack and drink for your child each day. Students are encouraged to bring in a water bottle to keep at their desks throughout the day.
Please make sure that students have sneakers daily for gym and recess. If you have an extra pair you would like them to leave in their lockers, that is terrific!
Specials
Day 1 PE
Day 2 Art
Day 3 Library
Day 4 PE
Day 5 Music
Day 6 Media Literacy
Our specials rotate on a 6-day schedule. The first day of school will be a Day 1, the second day of school will be a Day 2, and so on. After Day 6, we start over again at Day 1. I will be sending home a printed monthly schedule and sending home weekly reminders with my weekly class newsletters.
If there is a snow day, we miss that day in the schedule and go on to the next day when we return to school. So if the snow day was a Day 4, when we go back to school the next day, it is a Day 5.
What about days of no school due to holidays or superintendent's conference days? Let's say the "no school" day would have been a Day 3. When we return to school the next day, that day is a Day 3.
All students need a smock for art class to keep their clothes clean. Please send in a smock labeled with your child's name. An old shirt large enough to fit over your child's clothing is fine.
Daily Folder
Students will bring home a Take Home Folder daily, and it should come back to school each morning. Anything on the left side can stay at home. Anything on the right side should be reviewed at home, filled out/signed (if needed), and returned to school in the folder. Any notes for me or the main office (e.g., dismissal changes) should be placed here.
Note: Not all unfinished classwork needs to be finished at home (only papers stamped "Finish & Return").
Fridays
Folders will come home each Friday with spelling lists and math fact flashcards for the following week. On Fridays I also send home a weekly newsletter.
Book Folder
Your child will bring home a Book Folder with a book to read at home. Please initial the reading log sheet when you feel that your child has mastered their current book. You do not need to note how many minutes your child spent reading the book. Please have your child return their folder (with the book and reading log) to school so that your child can select a new book.
Student of the Week!
On one special day each week, the student of the week is invited to bring 2 friends to have lunch with me in our classroom! In 2H the student of the week will be selected in a random drawing until all students have had a turn.
Birthdays
Families are invited to send in birthday treats to share with the class, if you would like.
Birthday treats should be store-bought and individually wrapped.
We have 23 students.
